I wanted to cleanup some of the remote media cache and ran into an issue where hollo isn't able to refetch remote media.

I'm running a janky cleanup script, hopefully there is an official feature added in the future that will address this.

@vsitante I think twitter used to be so good at finding and showing you new stuff in the same category that you liked (like if I liked a lot of One Piece fanart, it would show me more OP fanartists or fan writers) which was the good thing about it lol.

Now they (X) broke how that works anyways by only boosting maga alt-right stuff so it's useless. Bluesky "feels" better since it doesn't inherently push anything yet, but because they're a place that needs to make money, they eventually will.

I feel like if people reposted and commented on stuff as much as people used to reblog on tumblr, it wouldn't be so difficult to find stuff you were interested in. So it's a bit of a culture problem as well.

There's such a pressure to "grind for engagement" as a creator that I feel like sometimes other fans (creators, readers, and lurkers are disincentivized from proper community building (commenting, sharing, etc.). The push towards indie websites is just a technical way of pushing people to change their behavior.

I've noticed this change in myself as well, which is why I'm making the conscious effort of leaving more comments on stuff now.

Hate the fact that google does autobackup of your photos (I never asked it to) and then pesters you about paying for cloud storage.

I went and deleted EVERYTHING to clear up space so I could keep using my email.

Wow I just found another benefit of self hosting fedi. I always thought my old instance was pretty good at caching media but it always took a while to load.

I follow some jp artists on misskey who renote/repost other artists, and that media took a while to show up on my old server. I'm on Hollo now, and even the reposted stuff shows up pretty quickly!

At least my ~25gb cache is doing something 😅

Decapolice (from Level-5) was originally announced in a Nintendo Direct 3 years ago but now it's been announced that it has been moved to Switch 2 and won't be releasing on the original...

It's inevitable since Level-5 is incapable of delivering on time, but hopefully it's still a good game.

I think this article makes a really good point about how mastodon/fediverse doesn't have good tools to manage relationships between instances.

A single user instance like mine is open to harassment and dog piling, and I have no method of managing that other than blocking after the fact.

Hollo allows user blocking, but not instance blocking (yet), and I'm cognizant of the fact that if I happen to say something that draws the wrong crowd it's difficult to protect myself.

I read a oneshot manga in Japanese a while ago called "The Axed Mangaka Went to a Doujin Event | 打ち切られ漫画家、同人イベントへ行く。" which I really liked the premise of. You can read the original Japanese version here.

Basically, a manga artist for a shounen magazine gets their series cancelled, and after seeing some posts on twitter about some fan works of his series, he decides to check out Comiket to see what the fans are up to. He ends up encountering a BL doujin fan of his work, and meeting her inspires him to continue working on manga!

It's a very heartwarming and respectful take on fujin fan culture, and I was really impressed with it, to the point where I was actually planning on fan translating the oneshot myself.

Well I don't have to anymore because it got picked up for serialization as "Axed Mangaka and Doujin Creator | 打ち切られ漫画家と同人女".

@vsitante I definitely feel like I have more positive interactions on fedi than in other places. Slow but meaningful.

I wish more artists/fandom peeps migrated here instead of bluesky, but it's hard to argue against the lack of discoverability. Full text search doesn't exist for everyone and is quite resource intensive, let alone an algorithm to constantly recommend new posts with the same trending topics.

Now that I have a VPS I keep finding new uses for it to make my life easier 😅

PSA: If you share a YouTube video using the native share feature it now attaches your user ID (?si=xxxxxx) to the URL automatically.

YT likely does this to growth-hack DMs. When someone clicks on the link, YT can start a DM thread between you two automatically with this ID even if they found the link outside of the YT app.

If you post links publicly, I strongly recommend deleting the ID unless you want to post your user profile.

I've been using the Crunchyroll store to order my light novels and manga (holdover from Rightstuf RIP 😮‍💨), but recently so many books/volumes are out of stock/not restocked even though these are new releases!

This makes it super difficult to make my bulk orders and get the free shipping, so I'm going to move to a different store. I'm considering Merry Manga co.
