over the past couple months, i've been weighing whether or not to do this, and the breach put more of this into perspective for me. it's a hard decision, but i've decided to put good internet magazine on an indefinite hiatus. you can read more about the decision here.

thank you so much to everyone who supported the project. i love every single one of you. thank you.

Important Good Internet announcement

@xandra@tilde.zone

thank you to everyone who has reached out about good internet magazine's website being down! it looks like our web server was unfortunately compromised, and i'm currently working on restoring what i can and transferring to a new host. we might lose any new subscribers as of may 20th, but that might be OK if i can save everything else!

the great news is that no database interaction was found. i'll be sending out an email about this as well once we're migrated over.

i appreciate y'all so much.

@xandra@tilde.zone

despite me still sounding a bit congested, my chat with @jamesg.blog went well! an overall amazing experience on his podcast about the independent web! we could've kept going for hours, i'm sure. <3

we talk about building indie web communities and communicating the possibilities of having a personal website to new audiences and more. thank you so much for having me, james!!!

In this episode, Alexandra and I talk about, among other things, building indie web communities, communicating the possibilities of having a personal website, and more.

ok i remembered this and i am gonna make it public so more people can see it:

i am looking for website software™. i have tried quite a few and none of them really fit all my needs. i'm keen to hear recommendations

i have two websites:

  1. personal website, blog exists but is not the primary focus of the site
  2. kzk website, many pages, avatar info, resource (uv map etc) downloads, & lore repository, more often updated blog, & at least 2 people need to be able to work on the site with minimal fuss

i expect that it might take different things to accomplish these two use cases, but it'd be cool if i could do both with the same thing

i use NFSN for hosting, so it needs to be able to install / run / whatever there

i am currently using kiki - i very much like it, however, i'm running into the "too much friction in my update-the-site process for me to remember to do the thing" problem again. for the kinzart site, umbra also needs to be able to log in and edit the site - kiki's process is relatively simple, but he's not quite as much of a computer toucher as i am and i would like to make the process as painless as possible for him. (kiki does have a wiki mode that might work here, but i haven't gotten to test it myself yet. it's on the ever-growing burnout to-do list)

i have used, in no particular order:

  • jekyll & 11ty: SSGs in general are nice and all but the update-the-site process is enough of a pain that i lose interest in using them very quickly. also not a fan of having to install four zillion extra packages. especially not from npm anymore lmao
  • publii: honestly fine but i entirely killed my poor install trying to port the wip kzk site into it due to the sheer size of the thing. not entirely sure how that happened. couple other UI/UX prickles i had that i can't recall precisely right now
  • wordpress: it's wordpress. it functions. i would rather not use it. too bloated, too mullenweg. also feck the gutenberg editor
  • grav: felt like it was actively fighting me the whole time i was using it

i know there are more things out there, there has to be something that might work better than what we have going on right now

i have looked into ghost, but iirc the newer version doesn't work with nfsn's database system? unless that changed? and i am not very interested in swapping hosts at the moment

joomla and drupal exist but they both seem very overkill for what i'm doing, and also refused to install properly on nfsn when i tried lmao

movable type exists but it's also paid license for a zillion dollars that i do not have nor would spend on that for my purposes

classicpress exists but, still, would like to avoid wordpress

i'm aware of bookstack and might be able to bang that into shape, but it's gonna be a while before i have the energy to try

also a reiteration: i would rather not use another SSG a la jekyll / hugo / 11ty, unless the usage process is much less of a pain in the arse

and a specific note: if i had the energy to write my own thing, or code the whole sites from scratch, i would. i do not, i can not, please don't be That Guy in the replies

what yall got to recommend

I spent way too long trying to find an easy method of uploading images to my VPS to use for my blogs... I couldn't get any of the pretty solutions to work.

I ended up using tiny file manager and a caddy file browser as my solution.

Not that I had a lot to do anyways....

As suggested by @dougwade I added cta (call to action) to prompt users that they can install the web app / add to home screen for better experience! It works across browsers and OSes (tested on Chrome / Firefox / Safari on iOS and Chrome / Firefox on Android).

It turns out, if you visit a web app several times, Firefox will prompt users to install as well (2nd screenshot).

@corgidad@c7.io

My first ever little web app is live!

Trackmbta.app is a web app that can be "installed" on mobile devices. Like its name, it tracks MBTA trains so you can be smarter for your trips!

Features are:

- Live count down
- Live location of trains on the map (just in case you're curious where that damn train is that you're waiting forever...)
- Save your favorite stations locally for quick access

This web app cuts all the bullshit:

- No permission asked
- No data collected from you

If you are a red line commuter and see a ✨ on the app, you probably already know what it means! Those shiny new trains!

Try it and let me know what you think!

Hello

I've been on fedi since the great twitter exodus 2022, however i have never made a proper #introduction, so here it is.

I am a programmer and tinkerer but I find interest in many things.

#openhardware #diy
Currently I am working on making my own phone. :phone: I haven't really wrote much about it on here but i will be in the future! The plan to make a Nokia as if it was created today. (USB-C, 5G etc.) I have a picture of it attached. It is written in #cpp, however I am a real beginner, so please bear with me. Tips and tricks are greatly appreciated. The source code for it can be found here: https://codeberg.org/bvoigtlaender/open-phone

#webdev
I also like making websites. Currently I am making my own website over on https://bvoigtlaender.de there's lots in the making, so stay tuned for that! :computer: I plan on making it a fun place to check out and interact with.

I also like to post pictures i take under the #photography hashtag. (my profile currently consist of almost only that, i try to change that!) For that I use my Fuji XT-1 the built in iPhone 11 Camera or lately even my DSi

I also like #videogames. I used to make more, in fact I have started programming by making them in Game Maker :gm:. I am planning to get back to it but have not found the time lately. I like playing them as well of course. I currently play #yakuza #professorlayton.

I love my bike as well! Not sure if this is a topic i post about, but i still wanted to point that out! :smirking:

A new chapter of my life has begun.

Hi everyone, since September I’ve decided to dedicate myself exclusively to freelance work. I know it will be a challenge, but I feel it’s the natural evolution of my career.

For the first time, I’m taking on clients for web development (Laravel, PHP, TypeScript, and Vue) as well as DevOps consulting (Docker, CI/CD, and Traefik).

I’ll also continue to offer freelance consulting on New Relic monitoring, something I’ve already done in the past.

Fresh new instance, fresh new time.

I'm Erin, yet another autistic transgender anarchist from so-called Portland, Oregon. I used to have fancy tech jobs with titles like "Lead Full-Stack Software Engineer" until I burnt out, got laid off, and discovered that the tech industry was done with me. Nowadays I survive on a very part-time gig as a general technologist and some freelance tech work when I can find it. My part-time gig is unionized through the IWW, of which I am a proud member. I've been on fedi under various names and handles since GNU Social was the cool new thing.

My special interests include Cybersecurity, Casio watches, Dungeons & Dragons, the Indieweb, Linux, old ThinkPads, XMPP, Yuri Anime and Manga, and stuffed sharks.

I think it's worth me doing a new :

Hi! I'm Chris! I write code, I make things, and I parent.

My posts are generally about a few key areas: , , and .

As far as programming, I mostly focus on professionally, with a smattering of using . For my "not professional" development, I do a lot of in (usually using C#, though not always!), and I adore , particularly in , but also in many other languages! I stream software and game development on Twitch at twitch.tv/b4ux1t3. The schedule on there is not currently correct (January 2025), but should be soon.

When it comes to ham radio, I mostly focus on , though I do a little bit of and (well, I want to, anyway!). I'm a big user of and . Regarding TTRPG, I'm mostly a forever GM who runs , , and , though I love most games and often mix and match rules and stuff. I don't _hate_ , or otherwise, it's just not the sort of thing I enjoy running. I also GM professionally on startplaying.games/gm/b4ux1t3!

Professional Game Master - Chris | StartPlaying

I'm a relatively new GM, but I've already killed my fair share of parties. Wait, what do you mean, "That's not the point"? Ahem, anyway, I am a passionate collector of hobbies, and the one that has seemed to stick with me throughout the years is storytelling. I am a failed author, a hobbyist video game developer, and, most importantly here, I have always been an interactive storyteller. As far back as summer camp when I was barely old enough to put two and two together, I remember telling stories by the camp fire, and even participating in what later reflection revealed to be roleplaying sessions. In recent years, this knack for telling stories with other people (as opposed to *to* other people) has solidified into a short but successful career as a TTRPG G/DM. What began as grabbing the three D&D core books literally the day before my local game store closed for COVID has become what can only be described as an obsession with collaborative storytelling. I run all sorts of games, and I hope to see you at the virtual table for one of them!

A short introduction:

I'm an introvert, antisocial tech guy 😅
I like to use FOSS software wherever possible. My family considers me a tech nerd, I consider myself a tech noob.

Hobbies: web dev (FosseryWeb), running, kayaking, listening to music (mainly electro), watching tech, gameplay and Backrooms videos.

Age: twenties

Languages: 🇭🇺 (native) / 🇬🇧 (took language exam but I feel like I still suck at it sometimes lol)

LINUX JOURNEY
I'm a seasoned distrohopper, started on Linux Mint, went to Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Garuda, Zorin OS, Fedora, LMDE and finally Debian. Also had/have Nobara and PeppermintOS as secondary systems.
As for DE, GNOME is my (almost) all-time favorite, tried out Xfce, KDE and Cinnamon, but always returned to GNOME because it's the most comfortable to me (might also try out COSMIC)
On mobile (PinePhone) I went from Manjaro Plasma to Arch Plasma/Phosh, and now I'm on posmarketOS Phosh

MY STANCE ON PRIVACY
I care about my privacy, although I don't have the highest threat model, like to keep balance between privacy and convenience (although convenience is a bit of a subjective thing, some might consider right clicking to copy username then password from KeePassXC inconvenient, I don't lol).

PROGRAMS I USE
Favorite programs:
- LibreWolf
- OBS Studio
- Krita
- KeePassXC
- FreeTube
- yt-dlp
- Fluent Reader
- Haruna
- Joplin
- Anki

Other programs I use:
- Brave (for websites that don't work in Firefox based browser - shame on those web devs - btw I provide support for all major browser engines on FosseryWeb)
- GNOME Boxes
- Pulsar
- Gajim
- Flatseal
- Warehouse
- Portmaster
- Solanum
- Switcheroo
- Ear Tag
- Warp (the FOSS, GTK-based file transfer app, not the proprietary terminal emulator of course)

On mobile:
- Amberol
- Exercise Timer
- CoreArchiver
- Angelfish

Hi my name is Arne, I'm a programmer with an eclectic set of interests. I'm mainly active in the community, and before that in .

I used to make screencasts on lambdaisland.com (all free to watch now). Nowadays I run a Clojure-focused consultancy and agency, gaiwan.co .

I do a lot of , most notable the Kaocha test runner, but also several dozen other projects that people use in production every day. Much of this we now maintain with the Gaiwan team.

I grew up with the web and with open source, my first browser was Netscape 1.0, my first Linux was Red Hat 5. Just to say that I've been around for a bit. I do a lot of different programming but I'm a at heart. I care about an open web based on open standards.

I've done a lot of , lived in five countries, and speak five . Now I'm back in my native . Oh and I love (that's an understatement). Nice to meet you!

I joined this instance to immerse myself in the company of people much smarter, skilled, and experienced than me at programming. It's been an interest of mine for most of my life, but I've worked overwhelmingly physically laborious jobs despite that. Imposter syndrome is all too familiar, but gradually diminished I'm happy to say.

I'm excited to prove myself in the field, and open to job opportunities in which to do so.

Hi, I'm Jon (he/him). I'm halfway-decent at a lot of things, and would really like to master a few.

COVID unceremoniously dumped me from a management role which—although far from being in my ideal industry—provided hard-won stability after over a decade of trucking around the northeast US.

I've since put in a lot of time towards self-directed study of web development, already having ample experience sitting on my ass for long stretches with great focus.

I've been using this account as my primary for about a week now, and I'm think I'm settled on using it for the foreseeable future, so I guess it's time to do another post.

I'm a dad of four kids, and a web developer. I have a college degree in (or ) and had aspirations of being an actor. I kind of fell into web development as a career. It was a hobby back in high school, and I just needed to pay some bills after college, so I ended up doing this.

I always have aspirations to do other things, but for now, I'm pretty happy spending most of my time as a dad and husband.

Some day, I'd like to get back into , or maybe do some . I also enjoy and will, from time to time, post some , usually from somebody's .

Here's my post, a month and a half later, but sorry, I wasn't sure who I was back then.

I'm a middle-aged who doesn't particularly belong anywhere. I'm living in since January 2023, having lived in Brazil, China, Germany, and Estonia.

I learned to code in order to prototype my game ideas, and somehow one thing led to another and I ended up with a decades-long career. Still don't see myself as a ‘web guy’ (or gal) though. Game development tools are abysmally lagging behind in many ways, but still give me over React or over Express any day.

Also long-time advocate, I'm an expired CSM (Certified ScrumMaster) and agile coach, former co-founder now disillusioned with the idea of startups as a whole.

Now I'm working on my own game, and paying the bills with or web work.

I have a lot of opinions, many weird, and went through… stuff. If there's a 90% chance I'll offend and 10% chance I'll make lives better, I'll probably say it.
