I built a small tool for a problem I had in my own setup.

FARM runs Forgejo Actions jobs in disposable Incus VMs:

queued job → FARM → Incus VM → one-job runner → cleanup

Each VM gets one job and is deleted afterwards.

It also supports runner pools, queue-based scaling, idle capacity, lifecycle limits, cleanup and Prometheus metrics.

Forgejo Runner, the program executing workflows of continuous integration in , has been released in version 13.1.0. It features a new experimental plug-in API that is supposed to enable the community to integrate alternative job execution engines besides Docker and LXC. Forgejo Runner also no longer signals to commands that they are running within a terminal. forgejo.org/2026-09-runner-rel

I'm not too confident about maintaining my own git forge full time and using it for actions and all the other complicated netlify stuff, but I decided to at least self-host forgejo to backup my code from github. The mirror function makes it really easy to keep them synced.

Forgejo is a self-hosted lightweight software forge. Easy to install and low maintenance, it just does the job.

Ok, native English speakers, clear this out for me: how do you pronounce “Forgejo”?
Is it like “Forsh-joe”?
Is it “Forge(like “forget”)-joe”?
Is it “For-je-hoe”?
Honestly, for non-native speakers it’s sometimes a guessing game, and since you probably never heard it from a native speaker there’s a high chance you completely mispronounce the word. 😅

I have since extracted my deployment script into a reusable Forgejo Action, as I needed to re-use it in other pojects.

I did that mainly to experiment with the stack:

- Marmite, a static site generator written in Rust. Not perfect, but it's the only one that just worked and didn't make me change the directory layout or add extra information to markdown files.
- New Codeberg Pages service, which uses git-pages instead of the deprecated pages-server.
- Forgejo Actions, which came out of beta recently. Unlike Woodpecker CI, actions didn't require extra configuration steps. Deployment from an action to Codeberg Pages is very easy: https://docs.codeberg.org/codeberg-pages/forgejo-actions/

as some of you may know i made sth called bombai (name comes from bomba and ai) thats kinda like anubis or iocaine in purpose. those solutions are kind of “fine” already, but the thing about them is that anubis sucks for regular users too, and isnt always effective, and that iocaine usually relies on lists or similar things.

scrapers unfortunately come in all shapes and sizes and with new user agents or hidden ones all the time. after using anubis for a while, i got my forgejo downed again and so i went looking. iocaine seems like a good idea, but i want something that is sure to stop my git from going down even if i dont maintain it or the lists are incomplete.

what i made now does the following:

  • very configurable detection entirely based on behaviour, without modifying site content
    • request counting
    • one fail = timeout, continuously resetting if attempts continue (this can be excellently combined with trap paths)
    • weighted by path and such
    • blobbing entire subnets together if desired (needed for alibaba’s bot for example)
    • allows setting up “trap paths” that instantly flag someone for timeout upon visit
  • customizable response
    • redirection to iocaine or other trap
    • zip bombs (small ones usually since most scrapers are smart enough to not decompress them fully otherwise - but it makes it cheaper on bandwidth either way)
    • maze similar to but less sophisticated than iocaine
    • plain http or html response from file

it is worth mentioning especially explicitly that paths that are expensive for the server to provide (in storage or otherwise), can be thus limited extremely well, and of course most scrapers are blocked even far before the first time they request such a path.

if interest exists and help is needed setting it up or you just want to chat about it, DO IT I WOULD LOVE THAT.

if a bot makes it through that is capable of doing any harm, i consider that a bug immediately. make an issue and ill debug either your config or the program itself.

i use this myself for a bit now, and it works excellently for me with my forgejo.

It's been a while I refreshed my pinned #introduction toot, and I figured today will be a fitting day to write a new one.

Hi! Despite the avatar, I'm not a furry1, I'm a boring cishet white dude. Despite my privileged status, I might be considered a "terrorist"2 in some weird jurisdictions, and some companies3 will consider me a "malicious actor", because I built myself a crawler defense system that serves them an infinite maze of garbage. To them, I say: fuck you. I'm a Vengeful Mouse.

I also have the privilege of being able to admire the human body in all shapes and forms, even such "grotesque" things as a female presenting nipple (like this one: :female_presenting_nipple:, not to be confused with the :manboob:, an entirely different and totally not grotesque thing). I wish this was the norm, rather than a privilege.

I'm a serial drive-by contributor, I have my fingerprints all over the internet. I have code in #QMK, #Kaleidoscope, and #Chrysalis, but I contributed to #Forgejo, #niri, and a whole lot of other things too. I find great joy in playing with new things, and submitting patches or other contributions. I used to be a #Debian developer, I've put #Hy in production, and lately I've been building #NixOS configurations not only as a literate #OrgMode document, with with #OrgRoam. I am extremely normal and neurotypical.

Apart from these very normal things, I use #NixOS to boot into #Emacs, which is the real operating system I use, like a very sane, completely neurotypical person would. I also tend to live-toot (very verbosely) all kinds of shenanigans I'm up to, because I always forget I have a blog.

While I do wrangle code for a living in a variety of languages (in whatever language necessary, I'm a generalist! But if I can choose, I turn to #Rust, although #Lisp languages are also very dear to me), if it were up to me, I'd much prefer wrangling other kinds of words4 than programming language symbols. Sadly, we're not living in a world that makes possible, so I had no choice but become a #luddite and so can you.

But I'm not all about tech5! I'm also Dad to wonderful Twins, and Husband to my Wife, who not only puts up with my crazy, but gently6 fans the flames too. I may occassionally toot about #parenting, too.

I may or may not have an unhealthy addiction to footnotes7.

Attention server admins! Yesterday I've read a post by @simon_brooke how nasty AI scraper bots are attacking his self-hosted @forgejo instance. Soon after I'm seeing unusual, periodic traffic spikes on mine and again - dominated by OpenAI, but some other freeloaders too:

Watch out - it seems corporate AI techbros learned to scrape :forgejo: content and starts doing it on a massive scale :blobcatoutage: Remember when @Codeberg was (and repeatedly is) hit?

For now blocked IP ranges and User-Agent combinations, not sure for how long that will be enough :blobcatumm:

This about is the infamous "Day 2 operations" problem. I promise I will post more about these kind of situations.

After using Renovate on my self-hosted Forgejo for a few days, I realized there was an option missing, so I updated my blog post.

If you want to see the change log for the images that need to be updated, and they happen to be in GitHub (.com), then you need to pass a token to the Renovate workflow. I hope it has been well explained now.
