First of all, thank you to Erik and the crew for allowing me onto this instance.

I have major reservations about Mastodon.

I spent four years becoming VERY disillusioned, over about as many instances, with what Mastodon actually IS, as opposed to how it is PRESENTED, by those promoting the site/software. There is a vast disconnect between what many proponents say Mastodon is and the reality of the experience.

By my second instance I had already blocked mastodonDOTsocial wholesale. This was a problem as frankly most of the people I had originally followed on Mastodon were located there. I considered it the Twitter of the Fediverse and I wasn't wrong.

I was appalled that - exactly as with Twitter - when people on that instance found out how repugnant it was and how questionable those in charge of it were, they didn't leave. Clicks, numbers, maintaining their profile and their endorphin spike was clearly MUCH more important to them than principles.

I was appalled, but not surprised. I'd learned a long time back - being an early adopter on Facebook who subsequently burnt every bridge to that place in 2012 - that Social Media itself is an absolute horror. As a lens on humanity - especially the parts of humanity who see themselves as somehow moral - it is very unforgiving and highlights every hypocrisy, every exercise in privilege and minute-but-clung-to power, in exacting detail.

My opinion of humans, already barely above ground, grew gradually subterranean.

Mastodon is very much NOT free from the faults and flaws of the vile corporate social medias. It is simply this; it's not them. It does however contain the same people a lot of the time, and where they aren't present elsewhere I'm not seeing much in the way of them trying to be better. Still the authors linking to Amazon. Still the high-follower accounts posting selfie after selfie. Still the sport fans. Still the corporate shills.

They're not going away. I'd say people have short memories (particularly about what they have said previously online), but really, they just have no principles. None.

In 2007 I bought a LiveJournal account. My birth name. By 2012, when I dumped all things Zuckerberg, LJ had faded vastly in the west, though it remained popular in Russia and was indeed eventually bought by the Maffiya. I rarely posted there, as there was no-one left to see me. But I did later carry on using it as a diary, of sorts, especially as I kicked every other single corporate entity to the gutter.

At the end of December 2025 the crooks running LJ banned public posts. If one wanted to make a post visible to those without accounts, one had to now pay. As I'd already bought the account eighteen years previously I was not inclined to give in to blackmail.

So I lost my diary as well.

Since 2013, before Yahoo! bought it, I'd had a Tumblr account. The sequential nature of text/image/audio posting it enabled appealed to my nature. Of course it went downhill almost immediately and by 2016 I'd given up. After LJ went tits up I reactivated my old Tumblr account so I'd have somewhere to continue sporadic diary entries.

Oh sweet fuck.

I was unprepared for HOW repugnant it had become. I mean, I should have expected it but ..ugh. I just couldn't do it. Every time I posted something there I made the mistake of looking at the algorithm tab and it left me thinking only in terms of orbital mass drivers. And lots of them.

I considered Mastodon again. I needed somewhere to simply post stuff that I had to say 'outloud.' Without going bananas (..more bananas). So I applied here and was granted a place.

I'm not here to follow people (though I probably will) or be followed by them (though some may). I just want somewhere to write things down. Like this.

I'm not interested in numbers, clicks, mob approval at all. The over-reaching tenet of social media is "NEVER MIND THE QUALITY! FEEL THE WIDTH!" And I have absolutely zero interest in that.

Mastodon 4.6.0 installed ✅

Only thing not working so far, is the autocompletion for emojis. When typing `:check` it used to show a list of emojis with "check" in the name. This seems to be broken now :(

Over the years, I've had to make a concerted effort to bookmark less things. I've made small progress at that here and there. I admittedly still bookmark too much-- but it's better now, there's better organization. But today I couldn't find a link I bookmarked, and it pissed me off, so I spent a couple hours doing a nuclear-grade cleanout and organization of my Firefox bookmarks (Mastodon ones are up next, eventually).

All of this was also with a goal to gather all the #SmallWeb and #IndieWeb stuff together that I want to write about. And I did make some major progress on that front.

But one weird thing I noticed before, and what made the nuclear-grade cleanup of bookmarks today initially so overwhelming and now, so necessary, was this weird shit that Firefox does.

When I've had to import bookmarks or do profile changes and switches, things get doubled, tripled, quadrupled-- and also between Favorites, the Menu ones, the Toolbar ones, and there's not a lot that can be done about that, at least that I've found. And in my opinion, it's all just a bunch of bs, and a bad system, and something that's only customizable up to a point.

So I deleted a lot, consolidated a lot, but all of that took MASSIVE time today-- I just think it's weird that all that stuff isn't just SLIGHTLY more customizable.

"Mashable could not access the site properly".... That's it. #Bluesky is a site.... one site. If that one site goes down, most communication between Bluesky users is cut.

This is different from the #ActivityPub protocol, which #Mastodon and other services use, which is #decentralized today and not dependent on any one site.

The article re-iterates the illusion that Bluesky is "Often seen as the alternative to Elon Musk's X".

I've been thinking a lot about the #Fediverse ALT issue.

Some people are annoyed by posts without #Alttext, & others get reminded¹ to add it.

The core question is: How can we improve #accessibility?

Proposal:
☑️ Add a user filter to hide media posts without #AltTag
☑️ Reduced engagement on hidden posts would encourage adding #Alt text
☑️ People who need accessibility wouldn't have to encounter unlabeled media

Filters are a powerful feature here on Mastodon (not too sure about other fediverse platforms!), but they can definitely be made even more useful.

Something like this https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/9177 would be great for making "filter starter packs", for example "News Filters" with common news-related hashtags, keywords, and popular news site domains.

Threading in #Mastodon is pretty clunky I agree. I can't remember much about it, but in old-school #twitter there was an obvious "Continue" or "Next" button for threading. The server I'm currently on has a much larger char limit so it has not been an issue. The main reason I thread anything is for topics like travel logs that unfold over time.

Then there's just being kind to your readers... keep things simple, short, and concise. An ideal I am sometimes not able to achieve even with good intentions. 🙂

All tied to the community.

Imagine a fediprofile hub for mountain hikers where members can:

• display summit achievements

Combine that with a badge issuer and maybe a #Mastodon and/or #PixelFed server for the community.

Now you have a decentralized ecosystem.

I'm probably not going to post very much about TGif Gamer on Mastodon from now on since I got a Bluesky account, so I recommend viewing my Bluesky for that stuff, which is linked in my profile.

I know that the profile fields are very short when Mastodon is viewed on mobile, so to see all the links, I recommend either turning your phone to landscape, or viewing my profile on a desktop/laptop monitor.

My most common socials are always going to be the first link in each field, anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem for most people.

Dear fellow or potential fellow gotosocial instance admins,
I've come up with a novel way to set up a #gotosocial server behind a reverse proxy, which avoids the use of making new firewalling rules - both on a VPS, and creating port forwarding on one's home router. This method is ideal for minimizing the cost of running one's own #ActivityPub/#Mastodon server, in a way that leverages inexpensive fast storage on the backend (say, on a #RaspberryPi 5, 2GB of RAM, with an NVMe). As many valiant and praiseworthy Mastodon server admins might attest to, renting cloud VPS' can cost a lot, especially when storing many tens or hundreds of GB of user data.

My method avoids the need of forwarding ports 443 and 80 into one's home LAN, using DNAT (on the VPS) and port forwarding (on one's home router). In a nutshell, it's a novel use of #Wireguard, in conjunction with #nginx on the frontend, and gotosocial on the backend. This can save the cost of renting a dedicated VPS, to get the exclusive use of ports 443 and 80, in conjunction with static IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. My method optimizes on reliability and cheapness, but it's not the most secure - decryption and re-encryption happens on the VPS, before the data travels down the Wireguard tunnel. This exposes the data to any underlying hypervisor at one's hosting company. So full disclosure there.

I've run my method by the helpful gotosocial furries in their #Matrix Help chatroom (and I'm grateful for their help to debug subtle warts the method had), and got their blessing, at least to the technical soundness of the method.

Normies / newcomers – Think of it like a free, privacy-respecting Linktree. No trackers, no ads. But here's the cool part: it's a Trojan horse for the fediverse. Your profile link is itself an ActivityPub actor. That means people can interact with it directly in the fediverse, and it encourages exploration of open platforms.

Fediverse users, If you have multiple accounts (#Mastodon, #Pixelfed, Loops, a federated blog…), you know the struggle: sometimes you just want one persona to follow. This tool gives you that. It doesn’t post on its own (read-only), but it boosts all your other accounts and even has its own #ActivityPub inbox. PLUS it can receive and show your badges issued by @badgefed !

#Mastodon tip: There is a way to use only part of a word as a hashtag!

For example, you might want to say the word “toots”, but use the hashtag “toot”.

To do this, place a U+2060 WORD JOINER before the “s” in “toots”. Example: #toot⁠s.

If you're using #X11 or #Wayland (i.e. #Linux or #BSD desktop), you can add the following line to ~/.XCompose to give yourself a keyboard shortcut:

<Multi_key> <w> <j> : "⁠" U2060 # WORD JOINER

Then just type Compose, then W, then J.

Das führt dazu, dass die Beiträge in der Timeline ungleichmäßig und unschön wirken, da die Bilder unterschiedliche Formate aufweisen.

This app is meant as a supplement to a full-fledged #mastodon client, not as a replacement. Ideally I would like to see the functionality integrated in some full-fledged client.

Some interoperation with the standard mastodon web client, #phanpy, and #elk is supported. More clients could be supported easily.

Sometimes I want to follow an interesting #fediverse discussion with dozens or even hundreds of toots. With the #mastodon clients I know, it is easy to loose track
- which toot is a reply to which other toot and
- which toots I have already seen and which ones are new.

Moin! Ich bin letztes Jahr #Mastodon beigetreten, hatte damals keine Ahnung über's #Fediverse und bin zum bekanntesten mastodon.social gegangen. Dann war der acc erstmal ziemlich stillgelegt, bis ich Ende des Jahres mich mehr ins Fedivers gefuchst hab. Als ich die Seite auf @FediTips bezüglich "großen #Servern und warum sie ein #Problem sind" gelesen habe, hatte ich schon ca 150 Posts und wollte ungern umziehen. https://fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-idea-to-join-a-big-server/
Nach erneuter #Recherche aber herausgefunden, dass der alte Account beim #Umzug nicht gelöscht wird und auch eine redirect Funktion hat. Bei nun 300 Posts war's mir doch etwas mulmig, aber na ja, hab's doch getan.

Der Server hat zwar ein paar Server blockiert, wie zb den #newsmast, die ich gern mochte, aber nun ja. Ist nicht sooo schlimm. Hingegen sind die 5000 Zeichen viel besser als die 500. x3

Ich mach noch n richtigen #Vorstellungspost … irgendwann … wenn ich's nicht vergesse. Aber hier erstmal die kleine #Story, warum ich umgezogen bin.

As a pacifist, what I love most about the Fediverse is how it feels like a shared search for peace. We have Caturday, when everyone posts cat pictures every Saturday. There's Mosstodon, which is all about sharing beautiful photos of moss and nature. And we have SilentSunday, where people post calm outdoor and nature photos. Even with all the chaos in the world, the Fediverse has a way of calming my mind.

Die (fehlende) Reichweite für Organisationen, die das #Fediverse dann wieder verlassen, ist immer wieder ein Thema. Meiner Meinung nach liegt ein Teil des Problems darin, dass die allermeisten Organisationen gar nicht alle Einstellungen nutzen, die ihnen helfen würden, mehr Reichweite zu erzielen.
Neben dem Anzeigenamen und der Profilbeschreibung sind das die Einstellungen für die Auffindbarkeit und Indexierbarkeit. Außerdem gibt es noch die Möglichkeit, Links zu Webseiten zu verifizieren und Beiträge anzuheften.

Ich habe diese fünf Kategorien unter dem Namen „Score” in unser #Mastodon-Listen-Tool eingetragen: https://mastodon-listen.playground.54gradsoftware.de/?liste=non-profit-organisationen-DE.

Von den 364 Accounts aus dieser Liste sind jeweils:
- 291 Accounts laut Einstellung auffindbar (80 %),
- 134 Accounts laut Einstellung indexierbar (37 %),
- 102 Accounts haben mindestens einen verifizierten Link (28 %),
- 74 Accounts haben mindestens einen angehefteten Beitrag (20 %).

Das sind meiner Meinung nach gar nicht mal so gute Zahlen. Mittelfristig wäre es natürlich spannend, wenn Mastodon in den Einstellungen eine Meta-Einstellung hätte, die Accounts, die auch wirklich Reichweite haben wollen, dabei hilft, alles Nötige einzustellen.

Bis dahin wird täglich in jeder Mastodon-Liste auch eine „Statistik dieser Liste” erzeugt. Durch Klicken auf den Wert in der Spalte „Score” könnt ihr euch die Details ansehen.

1. Każdy post powinien mieć "obrazek" wprowadzający, zajawkę (excerpt), fajny tytuł i slug (adres). Już na etapie publikacji, bo późniejsze aktualizacje albo dotrą do fedi, albo nie, albo z opóźnieniem. Tutaj przydaje się dyscyplina.

2. Warto dodać wtyczkę OG (od Open Graph). Po prostu OG - tak się nazywa mała wtyczka która robi co trzeba bez konfiguracji. Również postowanie linka do socialek da lepiej wyglądający post niż bez (fb/tt/fedi)

3. Ustawić jak najlepiej profil bloga: awatar, nazwa, opis i pola dodatkowe.

My top tip for getting into Mastodon is:

1) Make a post that says "hi, I'm interested in..." followed by like 10 hashtags about your interests.

2) Click and follow all the hashtags in your post.

3) People will boost your post and it'll go further because of the hashtags, due to the nature of the fediverse. Follow all the people who boost you; you can unfollow later if it's too many people.

oh ok so *here's* a neat feature of #Mastodon lists that I had hitherto been unaware of:

You can set them to include replies from list members to:
- No one
- Members of the List
- Any followed user

This is REALLY COOL. The 🤯 option for me personally is to be able to include only replies that members of the list sent to other members of the list. Great for "Local" lists, or lists for a busy topic bubble!

You can also change this setting later!

Ich habe es geschafft! In 24 Tagen habe ich 24 Texte der Kategorie #ScienceFiction #Microfiction verfasst. Nur zwei Mal habe ich geschwächelt und den Text erst am nächsten Tag veröffentlicht. Das Leben kam halt dazwischen.

Rückblickend kann ich sagen: Es hat Spass gemacht, fiktionale Texte innerhalb des harten Zeichenlimits eines #Mastodon Posts zu verfassen. Man muss sich sehr beschränken und um jedes Wort kämpfen, um in 1'000 Zeichen eine Geschichte unterzubringen. Aber ich werde diese verkürzte #30DayChallenge nächstes Jahr wiederholen, wahrscheinlich in einem anderen Genre und mit anderen Inspirationsquellen. Dieses Jahr habe ich antike Anekdoten, Mythen und Geschichten als Grundlage genommen und versucht, sie zu übertragen.

I’m Dave, a mental health advocate and lover of all things #coffee . I love playing #chess and listening to quantum physics and theoretical #physics lectures for fun. No I don’t fully grasp them but man are they fun to listen to. I have a learning disorder that I just recently stopped having shame over. Yay #dyslexia . I am also a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and I am tired of being ashamed of it. I’m bipolar and have major depressive disorder as well as some ptsd. I use to help run a busy Emergency Room in #NYC until my mental breakdown. I’ve been battling for close to a decade since that breakdown for social security disability to no avail.
I love making people feel good. I’m silly and because of recently found crazy meds I’m feeling real joy for the first time since I was a child. Now if only my insurance would pay for them. On my 2nd denial I believe.

edit: Got my meds. Only took five months two rejections and an amazing doctor.

🧵 (2/3) A lo largo de estos 10 años hemos realizado cambios de hardware, reposiciones por fallas, discos nuevos, fuentes, placas, etc. Siempre con hardware accesible y de consumo masivo, ya que es lo que nos permite el bolsillo. Otras veces, con hardware donado como forma de colaborar con el proyecto.

Avances 2025 en Seguridad, Descentralización y Soberanía Tecnológica

Nuevo hardware:
▶️ Switch HP 1410 24G de 24 bocas
▶️ Nuevo servidor YaCy: AMD quad core, 16 GB RAM, almacenamiento redundante.
▶️ Nuevo servidor Firewall: Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, almacenamiento redundante.

Gestión de servidores:
▶️ Contratamos BitDefender por un año para escaneos periódicos de virus (sí, es una empresa, pero lo usamos para funciones muy puntuales). Se complementa con lo ya existente: Amavis + SpamAssassin + MalDet.
▶️ Instalamos un nuevo servidor firewall físico independiente, equipado con: (pfSense, Suricata, pyBlockerNG, TrafficShaper)
▶️ Contratamos NordVPN, no para que Undernet lo use directamente, sino para separar el tráfico residencial del tráfico del servidor. Esto permitió que la IP de Undernet saliera de listas negras como SpamHaus, SpurUs, etc. Hoy las redes están completamente separadas, lo que mejora notablemente la seguridad y la reputación de la IP del servidor.
▶️ Separamos cargas y servicios distribuyéndolos en nuevos servidores físicos. Hoy contamos con 5 servidores independientes, cada uno dedicado a tareas específicas.
▶️ Cumplimos 1 año operando exitosamente uno de los 6 servidores NTP Stratum 1 de Uruguay, con excelente puntaje en https://undernet.uy/ntp/

The other day I was thinking about some of the people who I used to follow in the old blue bird site. A few of them did open accounts here on Mastodon, mostly because it was "trendy" at that time, but most (of those few) eventually left their accounts to rot. A lot of people from the old site just eventually ended up in Bluesky, but they are not even bridging here (I even asked, they ignored me).

Whatever their reasoning was, they lost followers one way or another, for sure. And now I have met new people, I have been following them, and some of those are following me back, which was unthinkable in the old site.

Time flies when we're having fun, and the past just becomes a blur.

#Hollo 0.7 brings a redesigned #notification system with much better performance. We've moved from generating #notifications on-demand to storing them as they happen, which makes the notifications endpoint about 60% faster. We've also added response compression (though if you're using a reverse proxy, you probably had this already).

More notably, Hollo 0.7 implements Mastodon's v2 grouped notifications API. Notifications like favorites, follows, and reblogs targeting the same post or account are now grouped together server-side, reducing clutter. Clients that support the new API (introduced in #Mastodon 4.3) will show cleaner, more organized notifications automatically.

Hollo 0.7 is still in development, but we're excited to share it with you when it's ready!

Mastoweb has no way to copy a profile (@user@instance), which is required for certain searches (e.g. from:…). Gotta grab it from the URL bar.

I was a full-time YouTuber. I’ve known burnout, platform opacity, and total invisibility. I now use a dumbphone, host my own files, and publish outside of the Google ecosystem. It’s been 2 years. Here’s what I’ve learned.

I'm French. And like many, I live with a digital past deeply rooted in YouTube. I’m still subscribed to channels I’ve followed for over ten years: Joueur du Grenier, Formula 1 shows… These are things I can’t find anywhere else. That’s what makes YouTube so hard to leave: it’s not just a tool, it’s a collective memory. I watched a few teasers on Nebula. It’s super creative, really well produced. I want to subscribe, especially for documentary content like ColdFusion. But there’s no Formula 1. No let’s plays of Pole Position 2 on Super NES. And above all: watching content in a foreign language requires effort. Effort I want to make — to detox. To leave Google.

ANDROID, DRIVE, CHROME: THE DIGITAL HOUSECLEANING BEGINS

I left Android two years ago. I now use a basic Alcatel dumbphone, and I’m incredibly happy. I can browse just fine from my PC — why have five devices at home to do the same thing? I’m not someone who scrolls in bed. I also left Google Drive. It took time. I first upgraded my PC storage, then invested in a Western Digital Home Cloud NAS. I know the experts say you need three backups "in case of global war or fire," but two is enough. Anyway, services like Canva, Shutterstock, and Envato already keep copies of the files you’ve bought. That’s already cloud storage — free and redundant. Western Digital reconciled me with NAS systems. Unlike Synology or QNAP, their approach seemed more honest. And the benefit of self-hosting is that after two years, you’ve paid off the device. Renting always costs more in the long run, whether it’s a server, a car, or a house.

THE INVISIBLE ADDICTION: CHROME AND PASSWORDS

Chrome was a nightmare to leave. All my passwords were stored there. Without Chrome, I felt like I had lost access to my own life. By luck — or bad luck — a bug forced me to clear the cache. I lost everything. That was the lifeline life threw at me. I took it. Grabbed my coat. Moved to Brave. But Brave’s search engine didn’t win me over. The results were too different from Google’s. So yes, even today, I still use Google Search. But I plan to give Brave another shot.

ANALYTICS, ADS: WHAT HIDES BEHIND THE INTERFACE

I’ve never used Google Analytics. The interface is built to make you lose your grip — worse than PayPal’s terms of service. It’s designed so that you leave everything on default. Including the settings that let Google build a profile on you. In 2024, I paid for Google Ads campaigns. Can’t complain about the results: Google treats its advertisers well. But from now on, I plan to try Brave Ads. You can target low-CPC countries — and honestly, an African visitor is worth just as much as a French or British one. It’s all about the metrics.

YOUTUBE VIDEOS ON MY BLOG: THE FINAL TRAP

I still embed YouTube videos on my blog. I shouldn’t. I should transcribe them, cite them, and cut the link. Why? Because when I visit my own site, and later go to YouTube, I get suggestions related to videos that appeared on my site. Even without clicking. Google picks up every embedded link. It’s a horror movie. Sounds paranoid? Maybe. But I was a full-time YouTuber for 18 months. I’ve known precariousness. Burnout. A boss with no email, no address, no phone number in France. I went through a professional humiliation that scarred me forever.
